Clearing, on the south side of Midway

Clearing runs from Harlem Avenue on the west to the tracks just east of Cicero Avenue, and from 59th Street down to 65th Street. The southern part of Midway Airport sits inside it. The Chicago Tribune has described it as a low-rise neighbourhood of bungalows, with planes passing low over 63rd Street and Central Avenue.

Clearing was incorporated as a village in 1912 and annexed to Chicago in 1915. Chrysler Village, between Long and Lavergne Avenues from 63rd to 65th Street, was built in 1943 as housing for workers at a Chrysler defense plant.

Industry just to the south

Two big pieces of Chicago’s industrial history carry the Clearing name, and both sit mostly across the line in Bedford Park. The Clearing Industrial District started in 1909 around 65th Street and Central Avenue, and the Chicago Tribune called it the first copy of the Central Manufacturing District’s planned-industrial idea. Just south of that is the Belt Railway’s Clearing Yard, on the boundary between Chicago and Bedford Park.

So the “yards” in our page names are yards like these, and the old stockyards: not a yard of ours. Smart Scrap Metal Buyers doesn’t run a lot you can drive to. We come to the car.
