A neighbourhood named for a yard
Back of the Yards got its name from the Union Stock Yards, which filled the ground from Halsted Street to Ashland Avenue and from Pershing Road to 47th Street until they closed in 1971. Most of that land became business and industrial parks. The neighbourhood sits in the New City community area, which runs from Pershing Road down to Garfield Boulevard, between the Norfolk Southern tracks on the east and Western Avenue on the west.
That history is why our area pages live under “yards and corridors.” We don’t have a yard here or anywhere; Smart Scrap Metal Buyers is a service-area business. We come to your car, tow it for free and pay you at pickup.
Streets and landmarks for pickup
The City of Chicago describes 47th Street and Ashland Avenue as the neighbourhood’s commercial corridors, and they’re the easiest reference points to give us. Other markers:
- The Union Stock Yard Gate on Exchange Avenue at Peoria Street, a Chicago Landmark since 1972 and a National Historic Landmark since 1981.
- Davis Square Park at 4430 S. Marshfield Avenue, opened in 1905.
- Sherman Park, bounded by 52nd Street, Racine Avenue, Garfield Boulevard and Loomis Boulevard, designed by the Olmsted Brothers and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
What we buy here
Any junk, wrecked or scrap car qualifies, starting or dead. Title gone missing? We can still help. List the papers you do have, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card; Illinois rules settle which of them count for a scrap sale, and we confirm it with you on the call. The form asks four questions about the car; the call covers anything else, like a missing catalytic converter or a car that won’t roll.
Back of the Yards also has a long record of neighbours organising for their own blocks: the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council was founded in 1939. If a car of yours has been sitting on a shared lot, scrapping it clears the space for everyone.
North across Pershing, and after the tow
North across Pershing Road, scrap car pickup in Bridgeport covers the next corridor. And if you want to know where the car ends up, scrap car recycling in Chicago walks through it.
Scrap car pickup in Back of the Yards: questions
- Is Back of the Yards the same as New City?
- Back of the Yards is the neighbourhood name most people use; New City is the official community area it sits in. We pick up across both.
- Can you pick up a car that's been sitting on a lot for years?
- Yes. Cars that haven't moved in years, with flat tires or rust, are what we buy. Tell us how it sits so we can plan the tow.
- Do you have a yard in the old stockyards area?
- No. The "yards" in our page names are the old stockyards and rail yards, not ours. We're a service-area business and come to the car.
